The Answers
1. Glass is made from silica (sand).
2. Demming Jarves of the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company invented pressed glass around 1830.
3. Depression glass was first made just prior to the Great Depression and lasted until the 1970's.
4. Carnival glass was iridescent Tiffany style art glass given away at carnivals or by saving coupons.
5. Fred Carder invented Aurene glass in 1904. His firm became Corning Glass Works.
6. Goofus is gaudy glass with a painted surface that almost looks like tinfoil.
7. Milk glass is white-and also blue and other colors.
8. Cameo glass is carved glass in layers, like Galle or Daum Nancy.
9. Crystal means transparent or colorless. It is not a "form" and does not designate "better" glass. Lead crystal was a marketing term for 20th century European cut and molded glass.
